• The History of Rome (1018 pages) Little is known of the early life of Livy. He first appears in Rome during the reign of Augustus. Augustus is said to have appointed Livy tutor to the young Claudius. Livy's great work is The History of Rome, which he wrote over the course of forty years and which documents Rome from its early beginnings up to the death of Drusus in 9BC. Of the 142 original books, only 1-10 and 21-45 are extant, although fragments and excerpts were recorded by other historians of the time. Livy's book had an enormous influence on historical writing in future generations.
